LG Washer OE Code: Meaning & Fixes

Meaning
Drain error: the washer could not pump the water out in the time allowed.
Can I fix it?
Yes, usually a DIY fix
Seen on
LG front-load and top-load washers. Some displays show it as 0E.

OE on an LG washer is a drain error. The washer tried to pump the water out, the level didn’t drop in time, and it stopped with water still in the drum. A clogged drain pump filter or a kinked drain hose causes most OE codes, and you can check both yourself.

Try this first

  1. Turn the washer off and back on, then run Rinse+Spin to see if it drains.
  2. Check the drain hose behind the washer for kinks or a crushed section.
  3. On a front-load model, clean the drain pump filter behind the small cover at the bottom front.
  4. If the laundry room is cold, warm it up. A frozen drain hose gives the same code.
  5. Pour a bucket of water into the standpipe or laundry sink. If it backs up, the house drain is the problem.

What causes OE

CauseWhat you noticeWhat to check
Clogged drain pump filter Water stays in the drum and the washer hums The filter behind the access cover at the bottom front
Kinked or blocked drain hose The washer drains very slowly or not at all The hose behind the washer and its end in the drain
Slow or clogged house drain Water backs up out of the standpipe or sink Run water into the drain by hand
Frozen drain hose OE in winter, in a garage or unheated room Warm the room and the hose before the next cycle
Failed drain pump No pump sound at all when the washer should drain Listen during Rinse+Spin; if silent, call a technician

Fix it step by step

  1. Unplug and get ready for water

Unplug the washer. Put towels and a shallow pan on the floor in front of it.

Safety: If the washer stopped mid-wash, the water may be hot. Let it cool before you open the filter.

  2. Open the access cover

On front-load models, the cover is at the bottom front corner. Pry it open with a coin or a flat screwdriver. Many LG top-load models have no filter you can reach; on those, skip to step 5.

  3. Drain the remaining water

Pull out the small drain tube next to the filter, remove its cap and let the water run into the pan. Expect several pans of water if the drum is full. Put the cap back when it stops.

  4. Clean the filter

Turn the filter counterclockwise and pull it out. Remove lint, coins, hair ties and anything else caught in it, rinse it, then screw it back in clockwise until it is tight.

Safety: A filter that isn't fully tightened will leak during the next cycle.

  5. Check the hose and test

Straighten the drain hose behind the washer and make sure the end isn't jammed into the bottom of the standpipe. Plug the washer in and run Rinse+Spin.

When to call a technician

If the filter and hose are clear and you hear no pump running when the washer tries to drain, or you hear it run but the water level doesn't drop, the drain pump or its wiring has likely failed. That repair needs a technician.

Questions people ask

How do I reset the OE code on an LG washer?

Press Power to turn the washer off, clear the cause, then turn it back on and run Rinse+Spin. The code clears once the water drains in time.

Is OE the same as 0E?

Yes. The display uses a letter O that looks like a zero. Both mean a drain error.

Why does my LG washer still show OE after I cleaned the filter?

Check the drain hose behind the machine for a kink and make sure the house drain isn't slow. If both are fine, the drain pump may be failing.
