Seen on
Bosch dishwashers. E25 is a related code for a blocked drain pump.

E24 on a Bosch dishwasher means water isn’t draining out. You’ll usually find standing water at the bottom of the tub. The common causes are a clogged filter, a kinked drain hose, or a blockage where the hose connects at the sink drain or garbage disposal.

Try this first

  1. Twist out the filter at the bottom of the tub and rinse it.
  2. Check the drain hose under the sink for kinks, especially if anything in the cabinet was moved.
  3. If the dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal, run the disposal for a few seconds.
  4. If there's an air gap cap on the sink, lift it off and clear the inside.
  5. Turn the dishwasher off and on, then start a short cycle.

What causes E24

CauseWhat you noticeWhat to check
Clogged filter Dirty water left in the bottom of the tub The filter at the bottom of the tub
Kinked drain hose E24 after work under the sink or moving the dishwasher The hose between the dishwasher and the sink drain
Blocked garbage disposal inlet E24 since a new disposal was installed The knockout plug in the disposal's dishwasher inlet
Clogged air gap Water spills out of the air gap on the sink Inside the air gap cap
Object stuck in the drain pump Humming or rattling, no drain, sometimes E25 Under the pump cover below the filter

Fix it step by step

  1. Turn off the power

Switch the dishwasher off at the circuit breaker.

Safety: Cut the power before you put your hand near the pump.

  2. Remove standing water

Scoop the water out of the bottom of the tub with a cup and soak up the rest with a sponge or towel.

  3. Clean the filter

Turn the filter counterclockwise and lift it out. Separate the fine mesh, scrub both parts with a soft brush under warm water, and put them back until the filter locks.

  4. Check under the pump cover

Below the filter is a small cover over the drain pump. On most Bosch models you can lever it out with the handle of a spoon. Remove any glass, fruit pits or labels you find, then press the cover back until it clicks.

Safety: Broken glass often ends up here. Wear gloves.

  5. Check the hose, disposal and air gap

Straighten the drain hose under the sink. Run the disposal, and clear the air gap if you have one.

  6. Test

Restore power and run a short cycle. Check that the tub is empty at the end.

When to call a technician

If the filter, pump cover, hose and sink drain are all clear and E24 still comes back, or the pump hums without moving water, the drain pump or the non-return valve may need replacing. A technician can test both.

Questions people ask

What's the difference between E24 and E25 on a Bosch dishwasher?

E24 points to a blocked drain path, usually the filter or hose. E25 points to the drain pump itself, often blocked by something under the pump cover. Cleaning the filter and checking under the pump cover covers both codes.

How do I reset a Bosch dishwasher with E24?

Clear the blockage, then turn the dishwasher off and back on. On many models, holding the Start button for a few seconds cancels the cycle and runs a drain. If the blockage is gone, the code won't come back.

Why did E24 start after a new garbage disposal was installed?

New disposals come with a plug in the dishwasher inlet. If it wasn't knocked out during install, the dishwasher has nowhere to drain. The plug is removed from inside the disposal; the installer or a plumber can do it.
