Whirlpool Washer F8 E1 Code: Meaning & Fixes
- Meaning
- Long fill: the washer is not detecting the correct amount of incoming water.
- Can I fix it?
- Yes, usually a DIY fix
- Also shown as
- E1 F8, LF
- Seen on
- Whirlpool front-load and top-load washers. Maytag washers use the same code; some models show LF or Lo FL instead.
Whirlpool’s checklist for F8 E1 starts at the taps: both fully open, no kinked hoses, clean inlet screens. Two less obvious causes are on the list too. An anti-flood device on the supply line can cut the flow, and a drain hose pushed deep into the standpipe can siphon water out while the washer fills.
Try this first
- Open the hot and cold taps behind the washer all the way.
- Straighten any kinks in the inlet hoses.
- Remove any anti-flood device on the supply line; it can cut the water flow.
- Check that the drain hose goes no more than 4.5 inches into the standpipe.
What causes F8 E1
| Cause | What you notice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Taps partly closed | Slow fill from the start | Both taps behind the washer |
| Kinked inlet hose | F8 E1 after the washer was moved | Both inlet hoses |
| Clogged inlet screens | Weak flow into the dispenser | The screens where the hoses meet the washer |
| Drain hose siphoning | Water drains out while the washer fills | Drain hose height and depth in the standpipe |
| Faulty inlet valve | Supply is fine but little water enters | Needs a technician |
Fix it step by step
Tap a step number to tick it off as you go. Ticks stay on this device.
-
Turn off power and water
Unplug the washer and close both taps.
Safety: Keep a towel and a bucket ready. The hoses hold water under pressure.
-
Clean the inlet screens
Unscrew both hoses from the back of the washer. Clean the mesh screens in the washer's inlets with a small brush, mild soap and water. If they're heavily clogged, have the inlet valve checked.
-
Check the drain hose
The drain hose should go no more than 4.5 inches into the standpipe, and the top of the standpipe should be at least 39 inches above the floor. Don't seal the hose in with tape.
-
Reconnect and test
Thread the hoses on by hand until seated, then tighten two-thirds of a turn more with pliers. Don't overtighten. Open the taps, check for drips, plug the washer in and run a Rinse & Spin cycle.
When to call a technician
If the taps are open, the screens are clean and water pressure is normal, but F8 E1 keeps returning, the inlet valve is the likely cause. A technician can test and replace it.
Questions people ask
Is E1 F8 the same as F8 E1?
Yes. The display shows the two parts in turns, so you may read it either way.
How do I clear F8 E1 on a Whirlpool washer?
Press Pause/Cancel twice, then Power once. The washer may run a drain routine of about 8 to 10 minutes, and the controls won't respond until it finishes. Unplugging the washer for 5 minutes also resets it. Fix the water supply first, or the code comes back on the next fill.
Can low water pressure cause F8 E1?
Yes. If other taps in the house are weak, or the pipes were recently worked on, the washer may not fill in time.
