LG Washer LE Code: Meaning & Fixes
- Meaning
- Locked motor error: the motor could not turn the drum.
- Can I fix it?
- Sometimes, may need a pro
- Seen on
- LG front-load and top-load washers.
LG’s own fix for LE starts with patience: the motor may be overloaded and hot, so let the washer rest for about 30 minutes before you restart it. Then lighten the load and check for anything jammed between the drum and the tub. If LE keeps coming back with an empty drum, the motor or its wiring needs a technician.
Try this first
- Turn the washer off and let it rest for about 30 minutes so the motor can cool, then restart.
- Take some laundry out. A drum packed tight with wet items can be too heavy for the motor to start.
- Use the Bedding cycle for comforters and other heavy items, and don't wash rubber-backed rugs or mats.
- With the power off and the drum empty, turn the drum by hand. It should move smoothly and quietly.
What causes LE
| Cause | What you notice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Drum overloaded | LE at the start of a cycle with a very full drum | Remove part of the load and restart |
| Item stuck between the drum and the tub | Scraping or grinding when you turn the drum by hand | Door seal folds and the gap at the drum edge |
| Loose wiring at the motor | LE comes and goes, sometimes after the washer was moved | Needs the back panel off; best left to a technician |
| Motor sensor or wiring fault | LE with an empty drum that turns freely by hand | Needs a technician |
| Damaged motor stator or rotor | Clicking or grinding from the back of the washer | Needs a technician |
Fix it step by step
Tap a step number to tick it off as you go. Ticks stay on this device.
-
Turn off and unplug
Press Power, then unplug the washer.
Safety: Never reach into the drum or turn it by hand while the washer is plugged in.
-
Lighten the load
If the drum was packed full, take out about half the laundry. Wet bedding and towels are the usual problem.
-
Turn the drum by hand
With the drum empty, rotate it slowly in both directions. It should turn with light resistance and no scraping, clicking or grinding.
-
Look for trapped items
Pull back the folds of the door seal on a front-load washer and check the gap at the drum edge with a flashlight. Remove anything caught there.
Safety: Underwire and small metal parts can be sharp. Use pliers rather than your fingers if something is wedged in.
-
Test empty
Wait about 30 minutes after the last error so the motor can cool. Plug the washer in and run Rinse+Spin with the drum empty. If LE appears with no load, stop and call for service.
When to call a technician
If LE shows up with an empty drum that turns freely, or you hear grinding or clicking from the back of the washer, the motor, its sensor or the wiring needs testing. Those parts sit behind the rear panel and are a job for a technician.
Questions people ask
Can overloading cause the LE code on an LG washer?
Yes. A drum packed with wet, heavy laundry can stop the motor from starting, and the washer reports LE. Take some items out and restart before looking for a part failure.
Does LE mean the motor is broken?
Not always. LE means the motor couldn't turn the drum at that moment. A jammed item, an overload or a loose connection can cause it. A failed sensor or motor is likely only when LE repeats with an empty drum.
Is it safe to keep running the washer with LE?
Running it again once after you reduce the load is fine. If LE keeps coming back, stop using it until it's checked, since forcing a motor that can't turn can damage other parts.
