Samsung Dishwasher 4C Code: Meaning & Fixes
- Meaning
- Water supply error: the dishwasher can't take in enough water, usually because of low pressure, a closed valve or a blocked supply line.
- Can I fix it?
- Sometimes, may need a pro
- Also shown as
- 4E
- Seen on
- Samsung dishwashers with a digital display. Some models show 4E; models without a display flash a combination of lights.
4C on a Samsung dishwasher is a water supply error: the dishwasher isn’t getting enough water to fill. Start under the sink. Open the supply valve all the way, check the supply line for kinks or ice, and clean debris from the inlet valve filter. Samsung also says FloodSafe hoses don’t work with its dishwashers.
Try this first
- Open the dishwasher's water supply valve under the sink fully (counterclockwise).
- Check the supply line for bends, kinks or freezing.
- Remove any FloodSafe hose. Samsung says they aren't compatible with its dishwashers.
- Turn on the kitchen tap. If the flow is weak there too, check whether the house supply is off for maintenance.
- Clean debris from the filter at the dishwasher's water inlet valve.
What causes 4C
| Cause | What you notice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Supply valve closed or partly closed | No or very little water enters at the start of a cycle | The shut-off valve under the sink |
| Kinked, bent or frozen supply line | Code after the dishwasher was moved, or in cold weather | The line between the valve and the dishwasher |
| Low water pressure or a FloodSafe hose | Slow fill, other taps weak | Samsung requires 20 to 120 psi |
| Clogged inlet valve filter | Weak fill after plumbing work | The filter at the inlet valve connection |
| Faulty inlet valve or control board | Valve open, pressure normal, still no fill | Needs a technician |
Fix it step by step
Tap a step number to tick it off as you go. Ticks stay on this device.
-
Turn off power and water
Switch off the dishwasher at its circuit breaker and close the supply valve under the sink before you disconnect anything.
Safety: The supply line holds water under pressure, and the inlet valve sits next to mains wiring behind the kick plate. Turn off the breaker and the water first, and keep a towel and a shallow pan ready.
-
Check the supply line
Follow the line from the valve to the dishwasher. Straighten any bend or kink and replace a damaged line. Samsung recommends a stainless steel supply line.
-
Thaw a frozen line or valve
If the line or valve is frozen, wrap it in a towel soaked in warm water until the ice melts. Don't force or bend a frozen line.
Safety: Use warm, not boiling, water to avoid burns.
-
Clean the inlet filter
Disconnect the supply line at the dishwasher and clear any grit from the filter at the inlet valve. Reconnect, open the valve and check for drips.
-
Restore power and test
Turn the breaker back on and start a cycle. Listen for water entering within the first minute or two.
When to call a technician
If the valve is fully open, the line is clear and pressure is within 20 to 120 psi but 4C keeps coming back, contact Samsung service. A defective inlet valve or control board needs a technician.
Questions people ask
Are 4C and 4E the same on a Samsung dishwasher?
Yes. Samsung lists 4C and 4E together as the dishwasher's water supply error.
Is the dishwasher 4C code the same as the washer 4C code?
It means the same kind of problem, not enough water coming in, but the parts differ. A dishwasher has one supply line and one inlet valve under the sink.
What water pressure does a Samsung dishwasher need?
Samsung lists 20 to 120 psi. Hot water at the supply should be 120 to 149°F.
