LG Dryer d80 Code: Meaning & Fixes

Meaning
Flow Sense duct blockage warning: airflow is restricted somewhere between the dryer and the outside vent. d80, d90 and d95 stand for roughly 80%, 90% and 95% restriction.
Can I fix it?
Yes, usually a DIY fix
Also shown as
d90, d95

LG electric and gas dryers with the Flow Sense duct blockage sensor. On some models the Flow Sense indicator shows bars instead of a code.

d80 on an LG dryer is a Flow Sense warning: the exhaust duct is about 80% restricted. d90 and d95 mean 90% and 95%. It’s a venting problem, not a broken part. Clean the lint filter, check the hose behind the dryer for kinks, and make sure the outside vent flaps open fully.

Try this first

  1. Clean the lint filter and wash it with warm water and a soft brush.
  2. Pull the dryer out and straighten the exhaust hose: no kinks, dents or coils.
  3. Run Air Dry and check for strong airflow at the outside vent.
  4. Clear lint from the outside vent hood and make sure the flaps open all the way.
  5. If the code stays after the vent is clean, have the duct run professionally cleaned.

What causes d80

CauseWhat you noticeWhat to check
Lint buildup in the filter or duct Long drying times, then d80, d90 or d95 Lint filter, filter housing and the duct behind the dryer
Crushed or kinked exhaust hose Code appears after the dryer was pushed back against the wall Hose should run straight or in a gentle S curve
Stuck outside vent flap Weak or no airflow at the outside vent Run Air Dry and watch the flaps open
Duct run too long or too many bends Code keeps returning with a clean filter and hose Professional vent cleaner can measure length and count 90 degree bends
No gas supply (gas dryers, d80 only) d80 with no heat on a gas dryer Gas shutoff valve open; call a technician if unsure

Fix it step by step

  1. Clean the lint filter

Remove the lint filter, clear the lint, then wash it with warm water and a soft brush. Let it dry fully before putting it back.

  2. Check the hose behind the dryer

Unplug the dryer and pull it out. The hose should not be crushed, dented, kinked or coiled like a spring, and it should run straight or in an S curve. Look for holes and loose connections, and use rigid or semi-rigid duct.

Safety: Electric dryers run on 240 volts. Unplug before moving the dryer. On a gas dryer, move it carefully so you don't strain the gas line.

  3. Disconnect and clear the duct

With the dryer unplugged, disconnect the duct from the dryer and look inside for lint or obstructions. Clear what you can reach, then reconnect it.

  4. Check the outside vent

Plug the dryer back in and run Air Dry. Outside, check for strong airflow and that the flaps open fully. Remove lint around the vent hood. Replace the exhaust cover if the flaps can't open.

  5. Call a vent cleaner

If the code returns with a clean filter, hose and vent, the restriction is inside the walls. A professional vent cleaner can clear it and check the duct length and number of bends.

Safety: LG says not to use the dryer with a severely restricted exhaust until the system is cleaned and repaired.

When to call a technician

Call a vent cleaning specialist if the restriction is inside the walls or the duct run is long. If the code still returns after the exhaust system is clean, LG says the dryer needs service, for example to check the blower fan. On a gas dryer, a d80 with no heat can mean no gas supply: leave gas lines to a technician.

Questions people ask

What's the difference between d80, d90 and d95?

They are the same Flow Sense warning at different levels. d80 is about 80% restriction, d90 about 90% and d95 about 95%. The higher the number, the more urgent the vent cleaning.

Can I keep using my LG dryer with d80?

The dryer may still run, but drying takes longer and lint keeps building up. At d90 or d95, LG says to stop using the dryer until the exhaust is cleaned, since a restricted exhaust can be unsafe.

Is d80 a broken part?

Usually not. It's an airflow warning from the duct sensor. The fix is in the lint filter, hose and vent. Only if the code stays with a clean vent does LG suggest service.

What do the bars on the Flow Sense display mean?

On models with a bar indicator, LG says two or four bars mean the exhaust is severely restricted. Use the same vent checks.
