Samsung Dryer 9C1 Code: Meaning & Fixes

Meaning
Power supply error: the dryer detected abnormal voltage. On dryers controlled from a washer with a multi-control kit, the washer can also report 9C1 falsely because of a software issue.

Samsung electric and gas dryers. Some models show 9E1. The multi-control case applies only to dryers stacked with a Samsung washer using a multi-control kit.

9C1 on a Samsung dryer means the voltage reaching the dryer is abnormal. Check that the dryer is plugged in firmly, sits on its own circuit and doesn’t use an extension cord. If your dryer is stacked under a washer with a multi-control kit, the code may be a software bug fixed through SmartThings.

Try this first

  1. Make sure the power cord is pushed fully into the outlet.
  2. Remove any extension cord and plug the dryer directly into its outlet.
  3. Check that the dryer is on its own circuit.
  4. Unplug the dryer for at least 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
  5. With a multi-control kit: wait more than 5 seconds after turning on the washer before controlling the dryer, and install the SmartThings software update.

What causes 9C1

CauseWhat you noticeWhat to check
Loose plug or power cord 9C1 after the dryer was moved Cord fully seated in the outlet
Extension cord or shared circuit 9C1 when other appliances run at the same time Direct connection to a dedicated circuit
Wrong supply voltage or cord installation 9C1 on a new install, or on a dryer brought from another country Have an electrician measure the outlet; check the cord installation
Multi-control kit software issue Washer reports dryer 9C1 when you control the dryer within 5 seconds of turning the washer on SmartThings software update for the dryer

Fix it step by step

  1. Check the plug and cord

Make sure the power cord is pushed fully into the outlet. Remove any extension cord and plug the dryer in directly.

Safety: Electric dryers run on 240 volts. Never open the outlet or the terminal block cover with power on.

  2. Reset the dryer

Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker, wait at least 30 seconds, then restore power and start a cycle.

  3. Confirm a dedicated circuit

The dryer should be on its own circuit. If other appliances share it, or the code appeared on a new installation, have an electrician check the outlet voltage and, for an electric dryer, that the power cord was installed properly.

Safety: Testing an outlet or wiring a 240 volt cord is work for a qualified electrician. On a gas dryer, leave the gas line alone.

  4. Imported dryers

If the dryer was bought in another country, 9C1 can be caused by a different power grid. Samsung notes that power grids and their rules vary between countries.

  5. Multi-control kit: update the software

If the dryer is stacked with a washer using a multi-control kit and the washer shows the dryer's 9C1, add the dryer to the SmartThings app and check for updates. The update takes about 20 minutes and the dryer won't respond while it installs. Until then, wait more than 5 seconds after turning the washer on before controlling the dryer.

When to call a technician

If the dryer is plugged in directly on its own circuit with the correct voltage, the software is up to date and 9C1 continues, request Samsung service. Some Samsung regions describe 9C1 as an electronic control fault that needs checking.

Questions people ask

Is 9C1 the same as 9E1?

Yes. Samsung lists 9C1 and 9E1 together. Which one you see depends on the model.

Why does my washer show a dryer 9C1 code?

With a multi-control kit, the washer can falsely report 9C1 if you control the dryer within 5 seconds of turning the washer on. Samsung fixes this with a software update through the SmartThings app.

Can an extension cord cause 9C1?

Yes. Samsung says the dryer should be on its own circuit and not use an extension cord, because either can leave the dryer with abnormal voltage.
