Bosch Dishwasher E22 Code: Meaning & Fixes

Meaning
Filter blocked: the filter at the bottom of the tub is clogged or not seated properly.
Can I fix it?
Yes, usually a DIY fix
Seen on
Bosch dishwashers that show two-digit E codes. Newer models with E:xx-xx codes show a separate filter message.

E22 is the one Bosch drain-area code that names the filter directly, so start there. Food and grease packed into the filter at the bottom of the tub stop water from reaching the pump. Bosch’s manual says to check the filters after each wash. Cleaning them usually clears E22 in a few minutes.

Try this first

  1. Take out the filter at the bottom of the tub, rinse it under running water and scrub it with a soft brush and mild soap.
  2. Refit the filter and turn it until it locks. A filter that isn't locked in place can trigger E22 too.
  3. Check under the drain pump cover below the filter for glass or other debris.
  4. Make sure the drain hose under the sink isn't kinked or sharply bent.
  5. Reset the dishwasher at the breaker for about 30 seconds, then run a short cycle.

What causes E22

CauseWhat you noticeWhat to check
Clogged filter Dirty water and food bits left in the tub The filter assembly at the bottom of the tub
Filter not locked in place E22 right after you cleaned the filter Turn the filter until the arrows line up
Debris under the pump cover Rattling during drain Under the cover below the filter
Kinked hose or clogged air gap Slow drain, water at the air gap Drain hose under the sink and the air gap cap

Fix it step by step

  1. Cut the power

Switch the dishwasher off at the circuit breaker.

Safety: Open the door slowly after a cycle: hot water or steam can escape.

  2. Remove the filter

Take out the lower rack. Turn the coarse filter counterclockwise and lift the filter system out, taking care not to drop debris into the sump below.

  3. Clean it

Pull the fine filter off, press the catches to free the coarse filter, and rinse all parts under running water with a soft brush. Clear the rim of debris between the coarse and fine filters.

  4. Check the pump cover

Scoop out any standing water. Pry the pump cover up with a spoon, grip it by the crosspiece and lift it diagonally inward and out. Remove any debris, then press the cover down until it clicks.

Safety: Sharp debris such as glass fragments can collect here. Handle it with care.

  5. Refit and test

Snap the filter parts together, put the system back and turn it clockwise until the arrows line up. Restore power and run a short cycle.

When to call a technician

If E22 comes back after the filter, pump cover, drain hose and air gap are clean and the dishwasher has been reset, contact Bosch customer support or a technician. The blockage or fault is then deeper in the drain system.

Questions people ask

What's the difference between E22, E24 and E25 on a Bosch dishwasher?

E22 points to a blocked filter. E24 and E25 point to the drain path: a kinked hose, a clogged air gap, or a blocked or loose drain pump cover. The checks overlap, so cleaning the filter and the pump cover covers all three.

How often should I clean the filter on a Bosch dishwasher?

Bosch's manual says to check the filters for residue after each wash, and clean them whenever you see food or grease building up.

How do I reset a Bosch dishwasher after E22?

Clean the filter first. Then switch the dishwasher off at the breaker for about 30 seconds, or about a minute, and turn it back on. If the filter is clear, the code won't return.
