F8 E4 on a Whirlpool dishwasher means water detected in the drip tray: the float switch in the base found water under the tub. Turn off the water supply and press Cancel once to stop the alarm. Then check the supply fitting for drips, look for suds from the wrong detergent and make sure the float switch is plugged in.

Try this first

  1. Turn off the water supply to the dishwasher and press Cancel once to silence the alarm.
  2. Look for drips at the water supply fitting under the dishwasher.
  3. If you see suds, turn the dishwasher off, let them settle and use only automatic dishwasher detergent.
  4. Check that the float switch connector is plugged in and locked.
  5. Empty the drip tray, then press Cancel again to clear the code.

What causes F8 E4

CauseWhat you noticeWhat to check
Loose or misaligned water supply fitting Drips under the dishwasher, often after installation The rubber washer and the 3/4-inch elbow fitting
Suds from dish soap or too much detergent Foam in the tub when you open the door Automatic dishwasher detergent only
Float switch disconnected F8 E4 right after installation with a dry base The float switch connector and its locking tab
Power cord touching the motor or lower tub F8 E4 after installation Cord routed away from the motor
Internal leak F8 E4 returns with dry fittings and no suds Needs a technician

Fix it step by step

  1. Stop the water and the alarm

Turn off the water supply to the dishwasher and press Cancel once. If a professional installed the dishwasher, leave the power on and the door closed: the drain sequence runs on its own and blocks operation until it's done. Then contact service.

  2. Check the water supply connection

If you installed it yourself, make sure the rubber washer sits in the fitting. Slide the 3/4-inch (19 mm) fitting of the 90-degree elbow onto the valve and hand-tighten it, then snug it with pliers. It may need another 1/4 to 1/2 turn to seal. The fill hose should exit at the rear left of the unit.

Safety: Turn off the water and power before you work under the dishwasher. Hand-tighten first to avoid cross-threading.

  3. Check the float switch and power cord

Make sure the float switch is connected: line up the connector with its housing and push until the locking tab shows over the back. Keep the power cord away from the motor and the lower tub.

Safety: Switch off the dishwasher's power at the outlet or breaker before you reach into the base.

  4. Empty the drip tray

If the drip tray holds water, press the snap on each side toward the center and pull the tray toward you. Empty it and slide it back.

Safety: Pull gently. The float switch wire stays attached and can be damaged.

  5. Clear the code and test

Press Cancel once to silence the alarm and again to clear the code. Turn the water back on, run a short cycle and watch for drips. Clean the dishwasher every 30 days or so with affresh Dishwasher Cleaner to keep residue down.

When to call a technician

If F8 E4 returns with a tight supply fitting, a connected float switch, no suds and an empty tray, water is leaking inside the dishwasher. Keep the water off and contact Whirlpool service.

Questions people ask

Is F8 E4 a drain pump error?

No. Whirlpool's code list defines F8 E4 as water detected in the drip tray. The dishwasher drains because it found water in the base, not because the pump failed.

How do I clear F8 E4 on a Whirlpool dishwasher?

Find and fix the water source, empty the drip tray, then press Cancel once to silence the alarm and a second time to clear the code.

What do 8 flashes and 4 flashes mean?

On Whirlpool dishwashers without a display, the Clean light flashes the F number, pauses 1 to 2 seconds, then flashes the E number. 8 flashes, a pause and 4 flashes is F8 E4.
