On most Samsung washers dC is a door error: the washer can’t confirm the door or lid is closed and locked. On some models, though, Samsung uses dC for an unbalanced load. If the door is shut and the drum is full of wet laundry that won’t spin, spread the load out and press Start. Your user manual shows which meaning applies.

Try this first

  1. Open the door or lid and close it firmly until you hear the latch click.
  2. Check the door seal and the latch for a sock, sleeve or zipper caught in it.
  3. On a top-load washer, take anything off the lid and make sure nothing inside sticks up above the tub rim.
  4. Take out a few items if the drum is packed tight against the door.
  5. Check that Child Lock is off. With Child Lock on and water in the tub, the washer can show a door code.
  6. Turn the washer off, wait a minute, turn it on and start the cycle again.

What causes dC

CauseWhat you noticeWhat to check
Door or lid not fully closed dC right after you press Start Close it firmly and listen for the click
Clothing caught in the seal or latch Door looks shut but springs back slightly The rubber seal and the latch opening
Drum overloaded Door needs force to close Remove some items and close again
Bent or broken door hook The hook on the door doesn't line up with the latch The hook on the inside edge of the door
Faulty door lock or lid switch dC keeps coming back with the door closed properly Needs the lock assembly tested

Fix it step by step

  1. Reset the washer

Turn the washer off, unplug it for one minute, then plug it back in.

  2. Clear the door area

Open the door or lid. Run your fingers around the rubber door seal and pull out anything caught in it. Look into the latch opening for lint or a small item.

Safety: If there's water in the drum, run Spin Only (called Drain/Spin on some models) before you open the door wide.

  3. Check the hook and the latch

On a front-load washer, look at the plastic hook on the door. It should be straight and sit in line with the latch opening when the door closes. On a top-load washer, check that the lid sits flat and the lid hinge isn't bent.

  4. Reload and close

If the drum was full, take a few items out. Close the door with a firm push until it clicks, then start a short cycle.

  5. Watch the first minute

The washer locks the door before it fills. If the lock clicks and water starts running, the code is cleared.

When to call a technician

If the door closes properly, the hook is straight and dC still comes back, the door lock assembly or its wiring has likely failed. If the door or latch is damaged, request service. The lock is inside the cabinet, so most people have a technician replace it.

Questions people ask

Is dC the same as dE on a Samsung washer?

Yes. Both point to the door or lid not being closed and locked. Newer Samsung washers show dC, older ones show dE.

Can dC mean an unbalanced load?

Yes, on some Samsung models. If the door is closed and locked but the washer stops before spinning a wet load, spread the laundry evenly and press Start. Your user manual's information code table shows which meaning your model uses.

Why does my Samsung washer show dC with the door closed?

The washer reads the lock, not just the door. A sleeve in the seal, a bent door hook or a worn lock can stop it from locking even when the door looks closed.

Can I bypass the door lock to finish the cycle?

No. The lock keeps the door shut while the drum spins and holds water. Fix what is stopping it from locking, or have the lock replaced.
