Older Samsung front-load and top-load washers (dE on a top-loader means the lid is open). Newer models show the same fault as dC. Some show dE1 when the door failed to lock or unlock.

dE is the code older Samsung washers use when the door or lid isn’t closed and locked. On a top-loader it usually means the lid is open. Newer Samsung models show the same fault as dC. Most of the time something is in the way of the latch, the drum is overloaded, or Child Lock is on with water in the tub.

Try this first

  1. Open the door and close it firmly until the latch clicks.
  2. Pull anything caught in the rubber door seal or the latch out of the way.
  3. Remove a few items if the load is packed against the door glass.
  4. Check that Child Lock is off.
  5. Unplug the washer for one minute, plug it back in and start again.

What causes dE

CauseWhat you noticeWhat to check
Door not closed firmly dE right after pressing Start Push the door shut until it clicks
Clothing in the door seal Door won't stay flush with the front The rubber seal all the way around
Overloaded drum Clothes press against the glass Take some items out
Door out of alignment Door sags or the hook misses the latch The door hook against the latch; a technician can adjust it
Worn door lock dE returns even with an empty drum Needs the lock assembly tested

Fix it step by step

  1. Reset the power

Unplug the washer or switch off its breaker for one minute, then restore power.

  2. Empty the drum if it holds water

If the cycle stopped with water inside, select Spin Only (Drain/Spin on some models) and let it finish before you work on the door.

Safety: Don't force the door open while there's water in the drum.

  3. Clear the seal and latch

With the door open, run your hand around the inside of the rubber seal and remove anything caught there. Wipe out the latch opening on the washer front.

  4. Check the door alignment

Close the door slowly and check that the hook goes straight into the latch.

Safety: If the door sags at the hinge or the hook misses the latch, the door needs adjusting. Have a technician check it.

  5. Run a short test

Start Rinse+Spin with an empty drum. The door should lock with a click before the washer fills.

When to call a technician

If the door closes and lines up correctly but dE keeps coming back, the door lock or its wiring is the likely cause. The lock is inside the cabinet and the door boot clamp, so replacing it is usually a technician job.

Questions people ask

Is dE on a Samsung washer the same as dC?

Yes. Both are door errors. Older Samsung washers show dE, newer ones show dC.

My Samsung washer shows dE and the door is locked. How do I open it?

Check that Child Lock is off and the cycle has finished. If water is still inside a front-loader, drain it through the emergency drain hose next to the debris filter, then turn the washer off and on and wait for the lock to click open. If the door still won't open, contact Samsung service. Don't pry it open: forcing it can release hot water.

Does a dE code mean the washer is broken?

Not usually. Most dE codes clear once the door closes properly. It points to a part only when it keeps coming back with nothing in the way.
