Maytag Washer Sd Code: Meaning & Fixes

Meaning
Excess suds detected: the washer found too much foam in the basket and runs a suds reduction routine to clear it.
Can I fix it?
Yes, usually a DIY fix
Also shown as
SUD, Sud, F0 E2, F0E2
Seen on
Maytag front-load washers and Maytag top-load HE washers with electronic controls. Some models show F0 E2 for the same suds condition, with Sd or SUD in the display.

Sd or SUD on a Maytag washer means it detected too many suds. If the Rinse light is on, let the cycle run: the washer is removing the suds on its own. If Cycle Complete is lit, run a Rinse/Spin cycle. Then use HE detergent only, measure it for the load and skip easy-pour bleach.

Try this first

  1. If the Rinse light is on, leave the washer alone and let it finish removing the suds.
  2. If the Cycle Complete light is on, run a Rinse/Spin cycle to finish rinsing and draining the load.
  3. Use only HE detergent and measure it for the load size and soil level. Large pacs are only for large or heavily soiled loads.
  4. If your washer has a bulk dispenser turned on, don't add detergent to the drum, and check its concentration setting.
  5. Run a Clean Washer cycle with affresh or a similar cleaner to clear detergent buildup.

What causes Sd

CauseWhat you noticeWhat to check
Too much detergent Sd on most loads, long cycles, foam left in the drum Dose per the detergent label; 2x, 4x and 8x concentrates need different amounts
Non-HE detergent Heavy foam even with a normal dose Look for the HE logo on the detergent
Easy-pour or no-splash chlorine bleach Sd on bleach loads Switch to regular liquid chlorine bleach
Detergent buildup inside the washer Sd keeps appearing after you cut the dose Run a Clean Washer cycle with a washer cleaner
Bulk dispenser set wrong Sd on loads that use the bulk dispenser Concentration setting; no extra detergent in the drum

Fix it step by step

  1. Read the status lights

With Sd and the Rinse light on, the washer is extending the rinse, pausing and adding water to break the suds down. This can repeat several times, so let it run. With Sd and Cycle Complete lit, the load may not be fully rinsed or drained.

  2. Rinse and spin the load

If the cycle ended with Sd, select Rinse/Spin and start it to finish rinsing and remove the water.

  3. Check the detergent

Use HE detergent and measure it for the load size and soil level. A 4x or 8x concentrate needs much less than a 2x detergent. Save large pacs for large or heavily soiled loads.

  4. Check the bleach

No-splash or easy-pour liquid chlorine bleach contains a thickener that can cause suds. Switch to regular liquid chlorine bleach.

  5. Clean the washer

Run an empty Clean Washer cycle with affresh or another washer cleaner to remove detergent residue. Repeat it monthly, or more often with hard water or heavy use.

When to call a technician

Sd is a suds warning, not a parts fault. If it keeps appearing after you have corrected the detergent, changed the bleach and cleaned the washer, Maytag says to schedule service or contact Maytag support.

Questions people ask

Is the Maytag Sd code the same as F0 E2?

Yes. Maytag uses F0 E2 for excess suds detected, and the display can show Sud or Sd while the washer deals with them.

Should I stop the washer when it shows Sd?

No. If the Rinse light is on, the washer is removing suds and the cycle should continue. Stopping it can leave soapy water in the load.

Why does my Maytag washer show Sd when I use HE detergent?

Too much HE detergent also causes it. Concentrated 4x and 8x detergents need far less than older 2x ones, and easy-pour bleach or buildup in the washer can add to the suds.
