Whirlpool Washer F9 E1 Code: Meaning & Fixes
- Meaning
- Long drain: the washer is taking too long to drain the water out of the tub.
- Can I fix it?
- Yes, usually a DIY fix
- Also shown as
- F9E1, F21, F02, LD
- Seen on
- Whirlpool front-load and top-load washers with electronic controls. Older Whirlpool front-loaders show F21 or F02 for long drain, and some top-load HE washers show Ld.
F9 E1 on a Whirlpool washer means long drain: the water took too long to leave the tub. Whirlpool’s first check is the drain hose, which should go no more than 4.5 inches into the standpipe and must not be taped in. On a front-loader, clean the drain pump filter and the door seal drain holes next.
Try this first
- Check that the drain hose goes no more than 4.5 inches into the standpipe or laundry tub and isn't taped or sealed to it.
- Straighten kinks in the drain hose and clear any clog in the standpipe or utility sink.
- On a front-loader, clean the drain pump filter. On some models it sits behind the bottom of the dispenser drawer.
- On a front-loader, clear the small drain holes in the door seal.
- Use only HE detergent in the recommended amount, since extra suds slow the drain.
What causes F9 E1
| Cause | What you notice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Drain hose too far into the standpipe | Siphoning, water draining back into the tub, slow or no spin | No more than 4.5 inches inside the pipe |
| Hose taped or sealed to the drain | Water siphons out while the washer fills | The hose should fit loose but secure, with an air gap |
| Kinked hose or clogged house drain | Water backs up at the standpipe or sink | The hose behind the washer and the drain itself |
| Clogged drain pump filter or door seal holes (front-load) | Water left in the drum after the cycle | The filter behind the lower panel or dispenser drawer |
| Too many suds or a failed drain pump | Suds in the drum, or no pump sound during drain | HE detergent only; a technician tests the pump |
Fix it step by step
Tap a step number to tick it off as you go. Ticks stay on this device.
-
Unplug the washer
Turn the washer off and unplug it before you move it, touch the hose or open the filter access.
Safety: Water and mains power together are dangerous. Unplug first, and let hot wash water cool before draining it.
-
Fix the drain hose
The hose should go no more than 4.5 inches into the standpipe or laundry tub and keep the U-shaped hose form from the installation instructions. Don't tape it to the drainpipe: it needs a gap so air can break the siphon. On a top-loader, don't push the hose past its elbow and keep the end higher than 36 inches from the floor. The highest point can be up to 96 inches above the bottom of the washer.
-
Clear kinks and clogs
Pull the washer out carefully, straighten the hose and check the standpipe or utility sink for a clog.
-
Clean the drain pump filter (front-load)
Put towels and a shallow pan down, open the access panel your owner's manual shows, drain the water and unscrew the filter. Remove lint and objects, rinse it and screw it back in firmly. Then wipe out the door seal and clear its drain holes.
Safety: Expect more water than the pan holds. Empty it and repeat.
-
Clear the code and test
Plug the washer back in, press Pause/Cancel, then run a Drain & Spin or Rinse & Spin cycle. If the code won't clear, unplug the washer for 5 minutes, then restart.
When to call a technician
If the hose is installed correctly, the filter and door seal are clean and F9 E1 keeps coming back, the drain pump may be jammed or failed. Contact Whirlpool service or a technician.
Questions people ask
Are F21, F02 and Ld the same as F9 E1?
They are long drain alerts from other Whirlpool platforms. Whirlpool says F21 and F02 on front-loaders mean drain times are longer than expected, and Ld on top-loaders means the washer is taking too long to drain. The checks are the same: hose, clogs, filter and detergent. Repairs beyond that depend on the model.
How do I clear F9 E1 on a Whirlpool washer?
Fix the drain problem first, then press Pause/Cancel. If the code stays, unplug the washer for 5 minutes, plug it back in and run a drain or spin cycle.
Can a drain hose that's too deep cause F9 E1?
Yes. If more than 4.5 inches of hose sits in the standpipe, or the hose is taped in, water can siphon out during the fill and the drain timing goes wrong. Pulling the hose back usually fixes it.
